Twitter’s new per-article payment system is announced by Elon Musk.

Twitter's new per-article payment system is announced by Elon Musk.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced on Saturday that the social media platform would soon allow media publishers to charge users per article with a single click, a move he believes will benefit both the public and media organizations.

The new feature, set to go live in May, will allow users to pay a higher price for occasional articles without committing to a monthly subscription.

Rolling out next month, this platform will allow media publishers to charge users on a per article basis with one click. This enables users who would not sign up for a monthly subscription to pay a higher per article price for when they want to read an occasional article,” Musk wrote in a recent tweet.

“Should be a major win-win for both media orgs & the public,” he concluded.

Additionally, Musk disclosed on Friday that Twitter will deduct 10% of content subscription fees after the first year, with no deductions made during the first 12 months.

Since taking over in October, the billionaire owner has made a great deal of changes to Twitter’s operations and offerings. These include monetizing Twitter’s verified blue tick and cutting the number of employees by about 80%. Since Twitter’s ad revenue fell last year, prior to his on-and-off acquisition that ultimately materialized, Musk has been enacting changes to increase revenue.
