When halftime replacement Angel Correa was sent for elbowing Antonio Rudiger in the chest, Atletico was down to 10 men.
As Gimenez headed Antoine Greizmann’s cross beyond Thibaut Courtois, he hushed the Santiago Bernabeu.
Late in the game, Rodriguez matched the defender with a header of his own to earn Real a point.
In the first half, both teams had a significant number of chances, but neither was effective enough to score.
The most talked-about aspect of the first half was Reinildo’s injury, which required the defender to be substituted after 23 minutes due to a serious knee injury he suffered in a collision with Federico Valverde.
When Vinicius surged into the box and crossed a cross to Benzema at the front post, the Frenchman missed a great opportunity to give Real the lead early in the second half as the ball skipped across the goal.
A few minutes later, Antione Greizmann appeared on the edge of the box and missed a wonderful opportunity to give Atletico the lead.
After only 19 minutes of play, Atletico was suddenly down to ten men as halftime replacement Angel Correa was sent for elbowing Antonio Rudiger in the chest.
Gimenez headed Greizmann’s cross from a free kick across the goal and into the bottom right corner, giving Real a deficit despite having a man advantage.
