Manchester City defeated rival Manchester United 2-1 at Wembley to win the 2023 FA Cup and move one victory away from completing a historic treble. Ilkay Gundogan scored twice in the victory.
Gundogan scored the fastest cup final goal in history after just 13 seconds as Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions took the lead right from the kickoff.
Long stretches of Citizens dominance were broken by a VAR intervention that resulted in a penalty being awarded for a hard handball against Jack Grealish, just beyond the half-hour mark.
The Red Devils were fortunate to be tied going into halftime thanks to United captain Bruno Fernandes, who calmly and quickly leveled the score.
After the break, the match felt more equal, but City regained control in minute 51 when Gundogan volleyed another shot past a half-blind David De Gea from 25 yards.
Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, a replacement, and Raphael Varane all came close to tying the score for United, but they could not score to force extra time as City won the domestic double. To win the continent’s top prize for the first time in its history and replicate United’s 1999 Triple Crown performance, City will now focus on the June 10 Champions League final versus Inter Milan.
