Andy Dosty, the host of Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, revealed during a Twitter Spaces conversation with Joy FM’s entertainment team that he previously had to play Nigerian music during a program.
The well-known DJ bemoaned the popularity of foreign music among Ghanaian music listeners and admitted that, despite his best efforts to play more Ghanaian music when hired for events, there was a time when he was forced to play Nigerian music at the request of a client.
Andy said how he had been playing Ghanaian music while guests were sitting at the event until a woman approached him and handed him a playlist of Nigerian songs that she wanted him to play.
“I’ve been to a party where I was easily playing music and everyone was glued to their seat. All of them were glued to their seat. No one wanted to get up and dance. It took one bold lady that walked up to me and she gave me her phone with a tall list of Nigerian songs, asking me to play any of them else they were leaving. I was asking myself questions. I was forced to play it.
This was at Paul Adom Otchere’s house. Big party with big people. And all of them were seated until I touched one Nigerian song and they all got up to dance, then I felt so ashamed. Like really, what’s happening? So the problem is us, the people. We don’t like what we have,” he said.
Andy added that barring “challenging” circumstances, he is the kind of DJ who can play two hours of Ghanaian music.

He asserted that while the DJs can promote the effort to play more Ghanaian music, the public won’t support it if they don’t enjoy the songs.
“I believe that we undervalue our music. Period, he said.
Speaking on “Joy Entertainment Unpacked,” he said this in response to a question on how effectively Ghanaian music can be promoted internationally.
Kwame Dadzie served as the program’s host, and presenters included audio engineer Kofi Boachie-Ansah Beatmenace, publisher/artiste manager Mark Darlington, music and media entrepreneur Baba Sadiq, and rapper Trigmatic (musician).
