Argentina defeated Panama 2-0 in their first game following the World Cup, with Lionel Messi scoring his 800th goal at the highest level.
After Cristiano Ronaldo, the 35-year-old attacker for Paris Saint-Germain became the second player to accomplish the feat.
Throughout the course of 17 seasons, Messi scored 672 goals for Barcelona and 29 for PSG.
Moreover, he has scored 99 goals for his country, including two in the World Cup final.
At the Monumental de Nunez Stadium in Buenos Aires, the Argentina captain added a free kick in the 89th minute to Thiago Almada’s opening goal from 11 minutes earlier.
It is another accomplishment in a remarkable career that has seen him capture nearly every major prize, including four Champions Leagues, ten La Liga championships, the Copa America, and, eventually, the World Cup in December.
He also holds the record for the most goals in a single season in the Spanish top division with 50 in 37 games during 2011–12. He has also scored more goals (474) and given more assists (192) than any other player to have played in La Liga.
