Mesut Ozil, 34, has officially announced his retirement from professional football.

On Wednesday morning, the German international took to Twitter to make the official announcement saying “After thoughtful consideration, I’m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football”.

Mesut Ozil began his career at Schalke before moving on to Werder Bremen, where he helped the team achieve the UEFA Cup final and win the DFB Pokal Cup in 2009.

He later joined Real Madrid, where he won the title and the Copa del Rey twice. However, with the rise of Cristiano Ronaldo, Ozil’s fortunes at the club declined, and he ultimately joined Arsenal in 2013.
