New Meta-owned app Threads saw record sign-ups as millions of users joined the Twitter rival app, surpassing all prior platforms, including artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT, in hitting the 100-million milestone on Monday, according to data tracking websites.
Threads, which is designed similarly to Twitter, quickly became the fastest-growing consumer app, with over a hundred million people signing up in less than five days of its launch.
According to research, ChatGPT took two months to reach 100 million users, whereas TikTok took nine months.
Unlike Threads, where the majority of users are Instagram users, the picture and video-sharing service has gained 100 million members in the two-and-a-half years since its start in 2010.
The new software was released late Wednesday on the Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries. It is not, however, available in Europe since Meta, the parent firm, is unsure how to negotiate the European Union’s data protection rules.
Twitter is estimated to have 200 million regular users, but it has seen numerous technological difficulties since Elon Musk purchased the network last year and laid off hundreds of employees.
Musk’s Twitter rival, Threads, faces challenges from rivals like Instagram, which has over one billion users. Quiver Quantitative reports that Threads has reached 100 million users, despite introducing charges and allowing banned right-wing accounts.
Other websites calculated the mark earlier by counting the “badges” received by Instagram users who downloaded Threads.
Musk has threatened to sue Meta for allegedly stealing trade secrets and intellectual property, which the company, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, denies.
Musk is feuding with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and the two have recently challenged each other to a cage fight.
