R. Kelly, a well-known American musician, has been transferred to a prison in North Carolina, where he will complete his jail time.
Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was transferred last Wednesday from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago to the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
In addition to the 30 years he is currently doing on a separate conviction out of New York, the Chicago native was sentenced in February to an additional year in prison for his Chicago conviction on federal child pornography and child enticement counts.
In September 2022, a federal jury in Chicago found Kelly guilty on six counts of sexually assaulting three women who testified in court using the aliases Jane, Pauline, and Nia. Kelly was not found guilty on charges of inducement against two other victims, Tracy and Brittany.
The same jury cleared him of seven other charges, including obstructing justice for allegedly rigging his 2008 child pornography trial in Chicago County with two accomplices.
Kelly is still charged with soliciting prostitution in Minnesota, but that case has been put on hold since his federal cases took priority.
Kim Foxx, the state’s attorney for Cook County, made the decision last month to drop the charges of sexual abuse and assault against Kelly, citing the fact that he already faced a lengthy prison sentence and the fact that her office’s limited resources would be better used pursuing other sexual assault cases.
When Kelly, 56, is just a little bit older than 79, he might be eligible for release from prison.
