The popular instant messaging app WhatsApp has unveiled a new feature that lets users save messages that are about to disappear.
The app’s disappearing messages feature causes messages to be automatically deleted from the chat after a predetermined period of time, which can range from 24 hours to 90 days. Even though this feature was intended to loosen up conversations, there was a chance that crucial messages might vanish before they could be saved.
WhatsApp has added a new function called “Keep in Chat” to address this problem.
Using the Keep in Chat feature, users can prevent certain messages from vanishing. The user can click on a message they want to keep and choose that option when they receive one that they want to keep.
A notification will then be sent to the sender giving them the chance to override the choice. If the sender agrees to the message being saved, a small bookmark icon and a “Kept Messages” folder will be added to the message. The message will be removed from everyone’s devices when the standard timer expires if the sender objects.
Users are meant to have more control over their conversations and the Keep in Chat feature is designed to do just that.
End-to-end encryption is one of WhatsApp’s privacy and security features that has drawn criticism. However, the company has insisted that the purpose of its features is to prevent messages from getting into the wrong hands. An additional measure to improve user security and privacy is the Keep in Chat feature.
Over the coming weeks, the new feature will gradually go global. Users must update their WhatsApp app to the most recent version in order to use it. The most recent addition to WhatsApp’s collection of privacy and security features—which also includes two-step verification, biometric authentication, and message forwarding restrictions—is the Keep in Chat feature.
